Why Roses need Thorns( and so do we)

We all admire roses for their beauty, softness, fragrance and colour; but it’s their thorns that guard their integrity. In the same way, life’s hardships are not meant to hurt us, they exist to shape us, to make us stronger by protecting us.

Thorns are not flaws

Yes, a rose without thorns would be beautiful, but it would also be vulnerable. It would lose its value. Without thorns, it could be plucked, torn, or crushed without any consequences.

  1. Thorns are not there to harm; they are there to protect.

  2. They are there to care, not to scare.

  3. They act as guards warning the hand that love requires a careful, loving, and gentle touch.

  4. They ensure that the bloom reaches its potential so that it can grow and spread its fragrance in the surroundings.

Just to reach to its full bloom, survive and stay protected, roses need the thorns, similarly, in our life also we need Boundaries, challenges and discomforts to grow and evolve.

When Softness Becomes Self-Neglect

Over the years, we were taught that:

  1. Being "kind" means being easily available.

  2. Being "loving" means tolerating every discomfort and every insult thrown at you.

  3. Being "caring" means sacrificing everything for the sake of others.

  4. Being "good" means never saying "No."

Thus, we became soft. We started tolerating, sacrificing, listening even if it was painful and exhausting for us. Many of us lost ourselves in the process of being soft, being loving and caring.

We kept adjusting till the last ounce of strength left. We listened even when we were mentally fighting our own battles. We stayed quiet when we ought to speak. We tolerated when, protesting was the best path. We drained ourselves. And that’s why we somewhere could never comprehend the need and the real purpose behind the existence of thorns.

Softness is beautiful—but trust me, softness without boundaries slowly turns into self-neglect. Just like a rose cannot survive on softness alone, neither can we.

Thorns Are Not Cruelty—Thorns are the protector of the beauty. We misunderstood them as the symbol of bitterness and arrogance. But they are none of these. Thorns are symbol of clarity and boundaries. Boundaries that protect us, our core, our softness.

What are your Thorns ?

Thorns are not cruelty. They are the protectors of beauty, symbolizing clarity and boundaries that safeguard our core and our softness.

  1. Each time you say, "This is not okay for me." — that’s your thorn.

  2. Each time you speak up for yourself — that’s your thorn.

  3. The very second you choose not to compromise, not to tolerate any injustice or insult done to you — you grow a thorn.

  4. Each time you choose distance over explanation and stop proving your worth — you grow a thorn.

  5. When you stop seeking validation for something that makes you happy, comfortable, and lively — you grow a thorn.

These moments may bring discomfort, but they make you stronger and your life more meaningful. They are your reminders that you are an individual, and it is your sole responsibility to protect and love yourself through boundaries.

Blooming Without Breaking

Growing thorns doesn’t make you harsh, doesn’t make you arrogant. It only makes you honest and stronger. It strengthens your sense of self-respect. It teaches you to value yourself.

Have you ever seen a rose apologizing for growing thorns? — The answer is never. It never does so and simply grow with all the thorn. Growing and evolving can never happen without thorns i.e. without boundaries. Boundaries protect you from external interferences, external judgements which often hinders your development. Boundaries serve you the exact conditions you need to reach your maximum potential.

We often worry about that—

“What if our boundaries hurt the other person deeply”,

“What if they consider us to be insensitive or arrogant”.

They may even say — “You have changed. You are not the same anymore.” — but you need to remember, Growth only happens when you Change.

You may also feel that the version of yours that tolerated, listened and sacrificed was considered to be more loving. You may even feel that, the stronger you, are all about becoming Rude. But this is far from reality. Strength is not about forgetting what softness feels like or what kindness looks like. In life, strength and kindness both can coexist. There is no need to choose between them.

Does a rose lose its fragrance because it has thorns? — No. You can be gentle and firm, compassionate and selective at the same time. You can love deeply and protect yourself fiercely. Whatever you do, for yourself or for anyone else must not invade or harm your boundaries. Just as the thorns of roses helps it to bloom fully and spread its fragrance, your boundaries help you to grow wiser and enhances your softness and makes you more loving. Your boundaries make your love intentional.

The Right People Stay

Not everyone deserves to touch a rose. One needs a gentle and caring hand to feel and experience its beauty. Similarly, the right people will reach you with care and compassion. They will respect your thorns — and will care and love with honesty. They will not intend towards breaking your walls, they will accept you with all your boundaries. They will consider your boundaries as part of your beauty, not as any obstacles.

Those who complain about your boundaries, then, were merely deriving benefits from your softness and kindness. It is your responsibility to distance yourself from them. And it’s okay to let them go.

Always remember, Boundaries doesn’t harden your heart, it protects your softness.

Softness must be shown where it is safe and valued. And here we came to our answer, why roses need thorns! And so do we.

Let me tell you this—softness didn’t fail you. What failed you was being open to everything and everyone. So don’t fear the boundaries you are growing now. They aren’t hinderances, they are care, that you are showering yourself. Just like a rose doesn’t lose its beauty same happens with our life.

You are learning how to bloom without Breaking, loving without losing yourself.
